Bury St. Edmunds was the county town of the county of West Suffolk but, as a result of local government re-organisation in 1974, the County of Suffolk was created with its administrative centre based in Ipswich. Only built in 1968, the New Shire Hall building became redundant for its original purpose but was subsequently used by the police. In 2015 it became a Premier Inn hotel.

A more modern vehicle in the form of Suffolk County Council G102 JNP, a Plaxton Paramount 3200 bodied Dennis Javelin new to Whittle’s Coaches in April 1990, is passing by en route to the swimming pool on a school to baths contract.
