Megabus Gold

Folder: Megabus
The Megabus Gold brand included overnight sleeper services between Scotland and London operated by coaches equipped with bunks. These vehicles could be converted to standard seating for daytime services. An admirable operation which ceased in May 2017.

Saturday 11 March 2017 – Megabus Gold Sleeper Coach 50312 (YJ64 AUP), a Van Hool TDX29 Astromega operated by Stagecoach Western, was on display at the 85th anniversary event at Victoria Coach Station, London. The coach is employed on overnight Glasgow-London service which completes the journey around 8 hours (From Glasgow 2330 arriving London 0720/from London 2300 arriving Glasgow 0700). The lower deck was configured with passenger seating arranged round tables whilst the upper deck was configured with sleeping accommodation. The idea is that the coach operates fully configured with sleeping accommodation for the overnight runs and be configured with seating on both decks for use on day services. (Unfortunately the dozen or so vehicles in the anniversary display so tightly parked this was the best exterior photograph I could get).

Studying the photos of the respective layouts comparisons can be made which show that the seat headrests remained on the bulkheads in either format. The metal armrests of the seats doubled as the restraints when configured with bunks. Beneath the headrests on the bulkhead are fittings that supported either the backrests of the day seats or the bars for the bunks. Upper deck view looking towards the front.

Thursday 12 May 2016 - When driving on the A14 we followed Stagecoach Megabus Gold sleeper coach 50302 (SF13 FMD) between Girton, near Cambridge (approx 0945) and Brampton Hut (A1/A14) (approx 1010). These coaches operate overnight from Aberdeen (Scotland) to London (England) in sleeper accommodation mode. They can be converted to standard seating layout for daytime operation although I am not aware if it was in service when photographed here near Huntingdon Race Course. The service number display (to the right of the word 'Coach' on the rear window) reads '000'. It is a Van Hool Astromega TX29 new in July 2013.
