Johnson’s Brothers (Tours) Limited of Worksop had a selection of coaches on display at Showbus along with this Volvo F16 truck with artwork depicting three of the company’s old coaches that attended the rally today.

At the top are 5188 RU (1963 Plaxton bodied Bedford VAL) and LHE 601W (1981 Plaxton Supreme bodied Volvo B58). Below those is GAL 967 (Duple Vista (1952) bodied Bedford OWB (1944).

Did the UK ever have semi-trailer buses?

Generally speaking Graham semi-trailer buses have not been used on normal regular public services in the UK.

However, they have been used as routine to transfer passengers within airports and on large industrial and government sites. Such vehicles if size compliant etc and properly licenced did travel out on public roads.

Only recently I saw a photograph of a semi-trailer bus owned I think by a brewery which had taken staff on a day trip to the seaside. Widely using tractor units to haul its delivery drays and trailers, having a few passenger carrying trailers for private use was beneficial to them.

Thanks David. I remember seeing them in the Sydney area occasionally as a child. My recollection is that they were used by bus companies as a larger capacity bus. The last time I saw one in use was 1966, it was one of 3 or 4 taking my school's Army Cadet members to the rifle range. Sadly, I had to go in a regular bus, not the semi.
