Whippet Coaches had been founded by Henry Lee in 1919 and was owned by the Lee family until November 2014 when the business was sold to Transit Systems, the owners of London based Tower Transit. In October 2018 ownership then passed to the Ascendal Group owned by the former CEO of Tower Transit.

The prefix letters in the bus fleet numbering system were created in Tower Transit days and signify Whippet (W) followed by a type letter (Double deck (D), Single deck (S) and Guided Busway equipped (G)). Coaches employed on contracted work for National Express work were prefixed NX and those now employed on Flixbus contracts are prefixed FX. (D and NX are no longer used as I write).
