USAF 80B 1576 at the Riverside Hotel, Mildenhall – 1 Aug 1989 (93-8)

Tuesday 1 August 1989 – The United States Air Force Base at RAF Mildenhall (Suffolk, UK) had a delivery of Wayne bodied International Harvester buses in the early part of 1980. Previously there was a mix of left hand drive and right hand drive buses employed with the entrance doors across from the driver. The 1980 intake was unusual in that they had passenger entrance doors on either side of the body so that passengers could be set down at the kerb when they were operating on public roads both inside and outside of the base perimeter.

80B 1576 was seen at the Riverside Hotel in Mill Street, Mildenhall when collecting personnel. The driver’s seat is on the British nearside with a passenger door immediately behind. The passenger door on the British offside was directly across from the driver as may be seen in this photograph. When delivered these buses were painted a rather nice dark blue but they later took on a military green paint job.
