Dealing with strong sunlight and shadows in Adobe CS4

On the bright sunlit days we hare having here at the moment (I am NOT complaining, but!) it makes exposure calculations rather trickier than usual. PS/ CS4 has a handy Shadows/Highlights adjustment under the Images tab, which can help adjust the extremes of contrast, which these conditions create. Note this is not the same as HDR....
