Digging down into the organic decay, close to the essence. G.M. Hopkins called it the “inscape” of a natural form, and the meanings we find in it the “instress”. It is a spiritual experience, sometimes, I think, to look so closely at some part of our surrounding world. Good photographs attempt what G.M.Hopkins also tried to capture in his drawings, notes and poems: that essence, that energy which makes us feel alive, even, perhaps, as we slowly perish like these decaying leaves.
