Dunston Staithes,Gateshead
Dunston Staithes are believed to be the largest timber structure in Europe. First opened in 1893 they were used in the transport of coal from the County Durham Coalfields. Coal was loaded from the Staithes onto ships in the River Tyne and transported around the British Isles and Internationally.

Fascinating! I had to look up "staithe," as I've never seen the word. From Merriam-Webster Dictionary, dialectal, England:
a wharf for transshipment especially of coal (as from railroad cars into ships).
So, now I know! Kind of a bridge, but not.
