Cuba - 2020
In Cuba for the 5th time, maybe the last time. A journey to old and mainly new places, we went from Santiago de Cuba to Baracoa - Moa - Rafael Freyre - Holguin - Manati - Camagüey - Moron - Remedios/Caibarien - Sagua la Grande - Cardenas - Hershey/Camilo Cienfuegos - Havana. Architecture (a lot of Art Deco), sugar mills (mostly abandoned), railway facilities and steam locomotives were the main su…

The ZIL-157 is a general purpose 6x6 truck, produced post-World War II in the Soviet Union by ZiL. It was a standard truck used by the russian army. I estimate the year built with about 1960. This truck is state-owned.

I assume it's an old Chevy Dually truck from the late 40s or early 50s, modified of course. It's a private vehicle.

I think, this is an old modified KB-3 truck from the late 1940s, produced by International Harvester. It's a private owned vehicle. Each of these trucks is "custom build".

This is obviously not the newest GRANMA, which is posted here. By the way, I have an abonnement for the monthly (german) GRANMA, which is quite interesting, if you love this country. And it's, for many unbelievable, indeed self-critical.

Bacardi Rum Factory - HFF!

The old Bacardi Rum Factory in Santiago de Cuba, which was founded in 1838, is still producing Rum, but not named Bacardi. The traditional Ron Caney brand (which is the original old Bacardi), Ron Santiago and Ron Varadero are made instead.

....and a statue of Don Martin Morua Delgado (1856-1910). He was Cuba’s first black Senate president after the country’s war for independence against Spanish rule in the 1890s. Son of an African-slave mother, Ines Delgado, and Spanish father, Francisco Morúa, Martín Morúa Delgado espoused both anti-slavery sentiments and exemplified ideas of success through meritocracy among Afro-Cubans.

Hatuey was a Taíno Chief in the 16th century and is Cuba's first national hero and one of the first fighters against colonialism. In 1511, Diego Velázquez set out from Hispaniola to conquer the island of Cuba to steal gold and indigenous Taíno people as slaves. Hatuey didn't succeed finally and was burned alive by the Spaniards. Before he was burned, a Spanish priest asked Hatuey if he would accept Jesus and go to heaven. Hatuey, thinking a little, asked the religious man if Spaniards went to heaven. The religious man answered yes... The chief then said without further thought that he did not want to go there but to hell so as not to be where they were and where he would not see such cruel people.
The first two PiP's are from the brewery's entrance, the 3rd is a statue somewhere near Trinidad and the last is a sculpture in Baracoa, where he was burned alive.
