The 553.33 m tall communication tower was the highest free standing structure on land in 1986 - not anymore of course - one PiP shows a closer view from another angle, the other PiP's show the sky pod at 446.5 m and the revolving restaurant at 351 m. - scanned slide, Minolta X700

I've been up there in the late 1980s..............peer pressure! I regretted it immediately and went back down as soon as I could. I can't even remember what the view was like.

This is a cracking shot though Berny........and just as I remember it.

Some of the Royal Marines that were onboard our ship abseiled down the tower..!!

Really.....must have been long ropes. By the way, I didn't know that in English "to abseil" is the same as the German "abseilen" ;-)

About "abseiled" I was surprised as well yesterday - and: at my downview photo through the glassy floor I discovered s.th. what I didn't take notice that time (and all the times later I looked at this picture). Just saying "Klettersteig". Coming soon! :-)

It's not a coincidence--abseil is a loan word from German! The more usual word, at least among American climbers, is rappel---which is a loan word from French! There _is_ no native English word, it seems. Both loan words are attested from the early 20th century.
