Pico Viejo

Pico Viejo
It is the second highest peak of Tenerife and the Canary Islands (after the Teide) with a height of 3135 m and a huge crater of approximately 720 metres in diameter. It erupted in 1798, and it is estimated that it ejected around 12 million m³ of lava over three months forming a black colored surface, which is different from the rest of the volcano area, which are known as the Teide noses. . See PiP's!

the earth is an intense place and you've really brought that out here with the centering of the mountain with nothing else showing!

my 3rd or 4th cousin on my dad's side lives in the Canary Islands - really nice to see some what is around her!

you might be interested in the volcano just north of me that is active and erupted in 1980 - Mt St Helens. i was luckily to the south of the eruption as the mountain mostly blew toward the northeast - that didn't save us from a very thick layer of ash, however, that lingered in the city for years. while most of it sunk into the earth over a few months, one would still notice black grit on the windowsills for around a couple years. here's a link to a Smithsonian video about it:

I'm very interested in volcanos and I viewed a lot of videos about the famous Mt St Helens eruption but not the Smithsonian one. Many thanks for the link. Best regards from Austria!

These may not be the most inspiring landscapes............but in these images I see a lot of amazing colours, shapes and textures, particularly in your second PiP. Very nice work Berny!

Superb. The rim of Kīlauea Iki, Hawaii looks similar where the wall has collapsed / collapsing

So fierce -- but inspiring

Von der Nähe gesehen nicht wirklich, also kein ständiges Ausrutschen auf Lavasteinchen!

What striking landscape images. Interesting shapes and colours, with the background information putting it all in perspective.

Toll, diese Kraterreihen! Wenn man bedekt, wie lange das schon her ist und immer och wächst nichts drauf....
