Tvornica Papira Rijeka - 1
This paper factory was one of the biggest ones in Europe in it's golden times and is now completly abondoned, a hidden ghost city in a canyon of river Rjecina.
The history of one of the first and most important paper-mills in Croatia begins in the industrially distant 1820s, when the complex was built largely, but major architectural changes were made also in the 20th century. At the time of its construction, the factory was state-of-the-art and it operated very well. The complex owned the first steam engine in the Balkans.
Sales of the manufactured products once again spread all over the world: United States, Argentina, Romania, Egypt, the Middle and the Far East. At the peak of its production more than a thousand workers were employed in the factory, and the yearly output exceeded 8000 tonnes. The paper-mill experienced severe damages several times during its 180 years of working life, both floods and fire, but the fatal shock that the factory could not survive was the economic one in 2005. - see PiP
