The Ice Sea Portal of Hammerfest

The Ice sea portal in front of the town hall from Hammerfest (Norway). The sculpture symbolizes the meridians running northwards and is crowned with the city coat of arms. The two polar bears on ice floes symbolize the history of Hammerfest as a city of the Arctic Ocean. Hammerfest used to be the starting point for polar bear hunts on Spitsbergen. The polar bear is therefore the heraldic animal of the city.

Die beiden Eisbären auf Eisschollen sollen die Geschichte Hammerfests als Eismeerstadt symbolisieren. Denn Hammerfest war früher der Ausgangspunkt für Eisbärjagden auf Spitzbergen. Der Eisbär ist deshalb das Wappentier der Stadt.
