Vertical is helpful, turning the camera gives you a little break before taking the pic ;-)
Apart from that I try to avoid unnecessary stuff - so seeing a scene means very often to go closer to get a narrower image.....

But to be honest: I tend to click the button too fast, too. Maybe I should always carry a tripod with me... ;-)

I can't imagine having to photograph like Ansel Adams did with full gear lugged up mountains and tripod set ups. I never have gotten into using a tripod, though I own one main one and one tiny one for desk top use. But you are right, it certainly would force us to slow down!
