Serra de Montejunto, Factory of Ice (XVII Century) (2)
TANKS FOR WATER FREEZING. When appropriate the thin layers of ice formed inside the tanks under local low temperatures were collected by workers and transported in baskets into the silos at the warehouse ( www.ipernity.com/doc/armando.taborda/1574179 ). There the ice was compressed with wood hammers for better conservation. Despite the storage losses from one labour season to another (winter time), the produced ice was enough to supply the Lisbon's customers: Portuguese court, hospitals and some elite coffee shops.
