Soliman ... der Elefant
Soliman

Engl.:
The arrival of the elephant in Brixen is historically documented. The animal was a gift from the Portuguese King John III to his nephew Archduke Maximilian of Austria. The journey by ship from Lisbon to Genoa was certainly no pleasure for the elephant, especially not the long walk over the Alps. The people along the way experienced the animal as a sensation: in Trento bishops and cardinals applauded it, in Bolzano it was received in triumph. Even in the small town of Brixen there were trellises when the elephant marched in with a large retinue shortly before Christmas 1551.
For the inn, which would soon bear his name, the arrival was a stroke of luck. The innkeeper Andrä Posch accommodated the elephant for 14 days until he moved north on January 2, 1552. In May 1552 the pachyderm reached the capital Vienna.
The long journey was followed by a short stay: The animal died in December 1553 in the menagerie in Kaiserebersdorf, where it perished from wrong feeding and probably also from homesickness.
After the elephant's death his journey was not yet over. His front foot was removed and the bones were transformed into an artistic chair, which is still kept today in Kremsmünster Abbey. Maximilian worshipped the rest to the Bavarian Duke Albrecht, who included the stuffed pachyderm in his show collection. As part of the Bavarian National Museum in Munich, it lasted another 400 years.
