A Bit of a Slog

08 Apr 2007 145
The heat builds up as the day progresses, making walking hard work , although the views do provide some distraction.

Nizwa Mosque

10 Apr 2007 147
As seen on the cover of the Bradt guide, although they were fortunate enough to be around in some better light.

Nizwa Fort Detail

10 Apr 2007 138
The top of the wall surrounding the main round tower. Although the fort was constructed in 1668, its restoration in 1990 means that it looks fairly pristine.

From the Edge of The Plateau

11 Apr 2007 126
Looking back from the Selma plateau as we reach the high point of our climb for the day, some 1700m above where we started near Wadi Bani Khaled. The cloud now is a bit of a relief from the relentless sun we had to endure during our ascent.

Dissected Land

12 Apr 2007 125
This part of Oman certainly has its ups and downs as we look over the edge to Wadi Tiwi.

Rock and Haze

12 Apr 2007 113

We didn't really work out what it was he did with his spade.

10 Apr 2007 153
Unintentionally blurry, but sort of works.

13 Apr 2007 119
Looking up the wadi towards the bathing pools and cave.

Hard and Soft

13 Apr 2007 134
Harsh rock scenery but transformed by the sight and sound of running water.

Sun, rock, water and flora.

Grand Mosque Minaret

14 Apr 2007 100
The minaret and entrance archway leading to the court of the main prayer hall. Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, Muscat, Oman.

A Chandelier Fit for a God

14 Apr 2007 133
This chandelier in the main prayer hall is 8m across and 14m high. It weighs 8 tonnes and contains 1,122 lamps and lots of Swarovski crystal. It is truly impressive to behold and certainly encourages lofty spritual thoughts. The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, Muscat, Oman.

Eight Tonne Chandelier

14 Apr 2007 127
Someone must have fun with the dusting. The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, Muscat, Oman.

Receding Chandeliers

14 Apr 2007 134
Looking down one of the riwaqs in the main prayer hall. The arches are in the Mamluk architectural tradition (it says in my guide book). The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, Muscat, Oman.
