03 Jul 2022 315
A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of on vacation / holiday . Sign: "The Club." Life preserver: "U.S. Vol. Life Saving Corps." This is a hand-tinted real photo postcard addressed on the other side to Miss G. Manning, 331 W. 29 St., N.Y. City. It was postmarked at Midland Beach , Staten Island, N.Y., and New Dorp , N.Y., on August 25, 1908. Handwritten message (with original spelling): "Dear Grace, I'm having a splendid vacation down here. We have a bungaloe down here for the month of August & part of Sept. It's great sport. I would have written sooner but never think of writing down here. I didn't attent that millinery class in the YWCA because you didn't. Love, F. Cooper." Added to the message: "Drop me a card. My address -- name. c/o W. H. Putnam, New Dorp, St. Island, N.Y. Woodland Beach." See also the full version of this card.

Snapped on July 4, 1908

03 Jul 2022 1 140
"Snapped July 4--1908." Although this photo isn't in perfect shape, I like it for the variety of expressions on the men's and women's faces, ranging from happy smiles to stern stares, at a Fourth of July gathering over a century ago. This comes from an unused real photo postcard with no message, address, or other identifying details.

Caught Napping with the Dead Gamers

24 Jul 2022 2 1 127
A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of asleep . Handwritten note on the other side of this photo: "This is the party that claims he got the Manheim bunch full when in Altoona . I caught him napping when the Dead Game[r]s of Lancaster was camping here." The Dead Gamers' Camping Association was a fraternal group based in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania (see The Dead Gamers Camp in Allenwood, Pa. , an article by Heather Truckenmiller on the Valley Girl Views blog). The photographer caught the man fast asleep on a cot during a sunny afternoon as bright light illuminated the sleeper and the side of the tent. This is a real photo postcard, and the type of Azo stamp box (with four corner triangles pointing up) printed on the other side suggests a date from 1904 to 1918.

Gently Down the Stream

A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of at the amusement park . A snapshot of a boat ride in an amusement park, date and location unknown.

Prom Couple, May 17, 1969

02 Oct 2022 2 3 112
A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of a high school prom photo (yours or someone else's) or any photo of a dressed-up couple , Handwritten note on the other side of the photo: "May 17th, 1969. Prom." A prom photo taken over fifty years ago. Anyone know the meaning of the symbols on the mat-like wall decorations? For another prom photo, see Prom Night .

Robert and Maud Pulling a Wagon

09 Oct 2022 1 3 201
A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of horses, carriages, or wagons . The handwritten message on the other side of this real photo postcard says, "This is our horses Robert & Maud in front of Fulton Miller's house." There's no stamp or postmark, but the card is addressed to "Mr. Glen[n] Lyle , RFD, Brookville, [Pennsylvania], c/o Herbert Lyle." The Velox stamp box (with diamonds in the corners and "Place Stamp Here" in the middle) indicates that it may date to as early as 1907-1917.

Smiling on the Sofa

16 Oct 2022 1 3 108
A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of sitting on the sofa . I like the colors and patterns in this undated photo of a couple and their dog posing for a picture in their living room. Note especially the bright red sofa (with white antimacassars ), the busy design printed on the curtains, and the woman's striped blouse and distinctive eyeglasses. For another unique sitting-on-the-sofa photo, see Easter Bunnies and Baskets .

Jack's Halloween Costume, 1933

29 Oct 2022 2 2 213
A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of tricks or treats! (any kind of Halloween photo, including costumes, masks, jack-o'-lanterns, decorations, ghosts, skeletons, haunted houses, or anything spooky, scary, or frightening; no limit—post as many Halloween photos as you'd like!) . Handwritten caption in green ink, lower right-hand corner: "Jack - Hallow-Eve - 1933." A real photo postcard showing "Jack" -- usually a man's name -- dressed as a woman for Halloween in 1933. The photo was previously pasted in an album and has remnants of paper and glue on the other side. The photographic paper used for the postcard backing has an Azo stamp box (squares in all four corners, in use from 1924 to 1949).

Who Was That Masked Man?

30 Oct 2022 1 1 209
A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of tricks or treats! (any kind of Halloween photo, including costumes, masks, jack-o'-lanterns, decorations, ghosts, skeletons, haunted houses, or anything spooky, scary, or frightening; no limit—post as many Halloween photos as you'd like!) . A photo of three young men goofing around in the backyard. I'm not sure if that's a Halloween mask or whether the fellow in the middle is wearing it voluntarily, but the two other guys appear to be having fun. There seems to be a lot of activity going on around them, with a woman partially visible on the right, a dog on the left, and a man walking in the background.

The Conductor of the Band at the Zillertal Beer Ha…

06 Nov 2022 1 1 191
A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of booze and music . "Hamburg-St. Pauli. Zillertal bleibt Zillertal." ("Zillertal remains the Zillertal.") Partially visible on the wall in the background: "Schaug das'd in Schwung kimmst!" (According to one source, this translates as "I see you come to life" in the Bavarian dialect). This is a souvenir real photo postcard from the Zillertal, a Bavarian-style beer hall that was located in the notorious Reeperbahn area in the St. Pauli district of Hamburg , Germany. The man wearing a suit and holding a baton is a tourist pretending to be the conductor of the house band, whose lederhosen-clad members are surrounding him. Other souvenir photos typically show the band with groups of tourists holding mugs of beer. See the Zillertal, Hamburg section of the Reardon Smith Ships site for photos of the exterior and interior of the Zillertal along with two more souvenir pictures.

Waiting at the Gate

04 Dec 2022 3 2 108
A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of leave-taking photos (at the door, next to the car, or near the front gate as visitors are getting ready to depart) . A young man and woman pause at the front gate as a photographer snaps a photo. Are they getting ready to leave to go somewhere together, or have they just returned? Both of them appear to be dressed up, and the man is holding an umbrella while the woman has a rolled-up piece of paper in her hands. Two buildings stand across the road, and a hill with trees is visible beyond them. In the foreground, a young boy is grinning and looking up at the photographer. This is an unused real photo postcard with only a name, "Doroles," written on the back. The Velox stamp box (with diamonds in the corners and "Place Stamp Here" in the middle) on the other side indicates that it may date to as early as 1907 to 1917.

Birthday Outing to the Triberg Waterfalls, Baden-W…

18 Dec 2022 3 4 228
A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of waterfalls . Handwritten note on the other side of this real photo postcard: "Von meinem Geburtstagsausflug an die Triberger Wasserfälle, 12. Sept. 1936." (Translation: "From my birthday outing to the Triberg Waterfalls, 12 Sept. 1936.") The names of "Mr. & Mrs. Vogal, Pforzheim, Germany" are written in a different hand where an address would go. There's no stamp or postmark, however, so I wonder if the Vogals are the couple in the photo. As Wikipedia explains, the Triberg Waterfalls "are waterfalls near Triberg in the Black Forest in Baden-Württemberg (Germany). With a descent of 163 m, it is one of the highest waterfalls in Germany and a landmark in the Black Forest region." Search for Triberger Wasserfälle to see other Ipernity photos of the falls. For another souvenir photo from a different waterfall, see Frances and Ned at Leura Falls, New South Wales, Australia, March 15, 1914 .

Foursome Flying over Long Beach, California, 1914

22 Jan 2023 1 110
A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of pick a particular format (daguerreotype, cabinet card, CDV, real photo postcard, cyanotype, slide, Polaroid, or what have you?) . Handwritten caption: "Betty -- J.G.R. -- Louise -- Harry. Venice -- 1914." This is a real photo postcard showing two couples -- Betty and J.G.R. along with Louise and Harry -- pretending to ride in an early biplane (see a cropped version of the photo for a better view of the foursome). The design of the Noko stamp box on the other side of the card indicates a date range of 1907 to 1929, which corresponds to the handwritten year of 1914 on the front. Although the caption indicates the location as "Venice," the structure pictured below the biplane was the pier in Long Beach -- not Venice -- California. The photo, of course, is a montage composed of a studio photo of the plane and its flyers along with the addition of a separate image of the pier. For a similar shot of an early plane, see Buzzing the Beach in a Biplane, Los Angeles, Calif. For an interesting discussion of the captions and messages on other real photo postcards, see Kenneth Wilson, Snapshots and Short Notes: Images and Messages of Early Twentieth-Century Photo Postcards (University of North Texas Press, 2020).
