The "23" that appears on the painted automobile prop in this novelty photo is a reference to the "23 skidoo" fad that became popular in the United States beginning in 1906 or 1907. Back then, telling someone "23 skidoo" meant "scram" or "beat it," and placing "23" in an unexpected place like this was a humorous way to let others in on the joke.

Great information. Not sure I've come across any of these but we don't seem to get nearly as many of the more whimsical types of RPPCs in Canada. Maybe I just need to look a little harder though.

Great photo. Thanks for the history of the "23 skidoo" expression. Coincidentally, the expression came up in an email correspondence I had last week in reference to an old photo I has sent a friend--used incorrectly I now understand.
