Silpha atrata

Silpha atrata
I think this beetle is Silpha atrata, a species that predates on snails. I found several specimens today at The Cliffe in Shropshire.

Thanks Maria, I was hoping it might have been S. tristis but think it is probably the commoner S. atrata now its on the computer screen. Not an easy species to photograph, they take up a defensive posture with the head under the body if you move quickly near them, even the flash firing caused them to adopt that position so a lot of failed attempts to get a couple of half decent shots..

Thanks Maria, think those superb pictures confirms it, def S. atrata. I couldn't find anything useful to separate the two species either, just vague comments about the punctuations and size none of which helped at all.
