Picos de Europa
A view to Covadonga Basilica.
From the entrance to the Shrine of Our Lady of Covadonga - a tunnel in the rock leads to a chapel in the rock but with a view to the outside. In the chapel, no photos are allowed.
A glimpse to Covadonga Basilica.
This is a view from the tunnel that leads to the chapel within the Shrine of Our Lady of Covadonga. This opening on the rock (natural? man made?) allows this view. On the right side, the tunnel leads to the chapel, where the opening on the rock is much larger, but photos are not allowed.
View from the basilica to the shrine.
The Shrine of Our Lady of Covadonga consists of a chapel in a grotto on a rocky wall.

In 711 the Moorish Omyad Army invaded the Iberian Peninsula, defeating the Christian Army in the Battle of Guadalete, Cadiz, Andalousia. The goal being occupying the whole peninsula, they advanced northwards. In the difficult mountains at north, a local Christian Army under the leadership of Pelayo succeeded in defeating the Moorish invaders in 722, in the Battle of Covadonga. The Christian warriors acclaimed Pelayo as king of the region.
