Fontainhas is a village on northern Santo Antão Island, Cape Verde. It stands above a deep valley and soil is very fertile. A hard work of making terraces on steep slopes enabled agriculture.

At the north of Santo Antão Island, Cape Verde, the village of Fontainhas stands on a steep mountainside, above a deep valley. To make possible agriculture on its fertile soil, many terraces were made on steep slopes. National Geographic included Fontainhas on the top-ten of most beautiful places in the world.

Built by Jews come from northern Africa and Europe, who settled in Cape Verde in the 19th century, the synagogue was decreasingly used as Jews married local women and their descendants didn't adopt Jewish religion. Soon the material of this abandoned building was taken to other constructions in progress. The ruins can be seen at Sinagoga, in the northeastern coast of São Vicente Island.
