Wow! This looks like the base for rotating a big WWII gun, part of a coastal defence fort. What is that "zig-zag" wall and group of buildings to the left (on the map)?

Or, maybe there was a windmill there that has been taken down.

You're probably right about having been a base for coastal defence artillery.
The zig-zag wall is in a quarry.
The group of buildings is Vila do Porto - the capital of Santa Maria Island.
