My favourite film of Tarkovsky’s, containing some remarkable scenes. None more so than the sequence where Domenico walks across the long sunken pool trying to shield a candle flame.
This tribute is imagined as taking place in a local canal.

For me, he's the greatest director (narrowly edging out Bergman, Kenji Mizoguchi and Marcel Carne) although I can never quite decide on a favourite - perhaps between this and The Sacrifice (but Stalker also stays with you) - Ever more it feels like we're all just trying to keep our candles alight in the face of seemingly insuperable odds.
