Posted but the date is difficult to decipher - April 24, 19(?)4.
Publisher / Photographer: Lyall Commercial Photo Limited.
The building was constructed in 1912, so it is reasonable to assume that the image was taken shortly after it was completed and that this card was mailed in 1914.

Date: March 9, 1912 (determined by the event pictured)

The Winnipeg Victorias were a senior mens amateur hockey team that was first organized in 1889. In 1896 they were the first team from Western Canada to win the Stanley Cup. They did so again in 1901. When, the rules changed in 1908 and the Stanley Cup would only awarded to professional teams, the Victorias remained an amateur team and competed for the Allan Cup. In early 1911, they won the Allan Cup by default and successfully defended it until a loss to the Winnipeg Hockey Club in early 1913.
In defense of the Allan Cup, the Victorias played and won two games against the Toronto Eatons on March 9, 1912. This picture was taken at one of those games. (I believe that the Victorias are in the black uniforms.)
I haven’t been able to determine in which rink the game was being played, but I suspect that it was the Winnipeg (Shea’s) Amphitheatre which, constructed in 1909 and seating 5000, was Winnipeg’s largest indoor rink at the time. (It was also the only rink between Vancouver and Toronto to feature artificial ice.)
Of interest in the image:
* There appears to be a man standing behind the net, likely a goal judge.
* The sign in front of the small balcony reads “Winnipeg City Band” and men with instruments are behind it.
* Is that actually a pole rising from the ice on the left side?
The following information is from the website hockeygods.com:
The Winnipeg Victorias received a challenge from the Toronto Eatons, Ontario champions - Second challenge of the Allan Cup in 1912.
In defence of the Allan Cup, the Victorias played and won two games against the Toronto Eatons on March 9, 1912.
Winnipeg Victorias 8 - Toronto Eatons 4
Winnipeg Victorias 16 - Toronto Eatons 1
The Winnipeg Victorias received three challenges for the Allan Cup in 1912 - First challenge was from the Calgary Athletic Club, Alberta champions, with scores of Winnipeg Victorias 11 - Calgary Athletic Club 0 and Winnipeg Victorias 8 - Calgary Athletic Club 6.
The third challenge was from the Regina Capitals, Saskatchewan champions, with a score of Winnipeg Victorias 9 - Regina Capitals 3.
The 1912 playoff marked the 5th time the Allan Cup had a champion.
Winnipeg Victorias Roster
Basil Baker - Goal , Francis Caldwell - Center, Les Moffat - Cover Point, Hammy Baker - Right Wing, Corky Fowler - Point, Fred Bawlf - Left Wing, Coo Dion - Rover, Gordon Wickson - Spare, Charlie Belcher - Spare.
WP1921 WPG - UNION BANK OF CANADA (INTERIOR)

Date: The handwritten note on the back includes a date that appears to read March 22nd (19)12.
Publisher / Photographer: Lyall Commercial
A rare image of the interior of the Union Bank of Canada at the SW corner of Main Street & William Avenue in Winnipeg.
The handwritten note on the reverse reads: “Dear Mother, as you see I am in Winnipeg. Hope you like these views – am settled up with Mrs.B. Will write all particulars in next letter, am getting on fine. Am still…” (Continued on the reverse of my card WP1920, Vics. V. Eatons) “…going East. Hoping you are all quite well. With love to all, Leslie.”
Of interest in the image:
* The marble tables (presumably for the use of customers) in the centre of the image both have desk pads on the near end and what could be ink wells.
* Oddly (to me), at the front of the closest table, there is an abacus. I am speculating that it was in place to take advantage of the Bank's proximity to Winnipeg's China Town and encourage patronage from its merchants and inhabitants.
* The clock appears to read 3:17.

POSTCARD
Date: Not evident. Unposted. Likely 1911 - see below.
Publisher / Photographer: Lyall Commercial, Winnipeg
Notation: Nice animated scene with a combination of transportation modes - walking, streetcars, bicycles, automobiles and horse-drawn conveyances. The Streetcar on the left is #190 and on the St. Boniface run and the one on the right, #132, is on the Broadway run. The usual Portage & Main policeman is to the front right of streetcar #190.
Of particular interest in the image:
* To the right, on the east side of Main Street, the open girders are the framework for the Union Trust Building at the Lombard intersection. This would date the image being taken either in the fall of 1911 - or the spring of 1912, when the earliest construction took place.
Further information on the Union Trust Tower / Union Tower Building found at: www.winnipeg.ca/ppd/Documents/Heritage/ListHistoricalResources/Lombard-191-long.pdf

POSTCARD
Date: Not evident. Not Posted. Likely between 1904 and 1912 - because the first two buildings on the left are the second Land Titles Building (far left, opened in 1904) and the first Land Titles Building (built in 1881 and demolished around 1912 to make way for the construction of the Law Courts building).
Publisher / Photographer: Lyall Commercial
Notation: Five significant Winnipeg buildings are seen in this image. As mentioned above, the first and second Law Courts buildings are on the middle left side. Slightly behind them and to the right is the original University of Manitoba building (in what is now Memorial Park). To the right of that, the large building with the spire is the old Law Courts building. Facing Kennedy Street, it was built in 1882. The addition on its north side was added in 1984. Lastly, just to the right of the addition, and seen hazily in the distance, are the twin spires of Wesley College (opened in 1896), now the University of Winnipeg.
