Winnipeg Winter

POSTCARD Date: Not evident. Unposted. Publisher / Photographer: Lyall Commercial, Winnipeg Notation: For some reason, I was drawn to this cluster of women down on the Assiniboine River. Great outfits, and fun to see the evident popularity of hand warmers / mufflers (properly known as "muffs"). At first I thought they were skating, but they are without skates - bystanders apparently. I also really like this card because the photographer Maurice Lyall chose to sign this one. (The signature was printed as part of the image - not individually signed.)

POSTCARD Date: Unposted, but accompanied my card WP1996 which was dated January, 1914. Publisher / Photographer: Lyall Commercial Notation: Note on the reverse identifies this incorrectly as a scene on the Red River, but reads: "This is a skating rink on the red river Winnipeg the ice now in places is about 3 foot thick not much fear of falling in there." I like the two bicycles at the bottom of the stairs - apparently winter cycling was not uncommon back then. Also enjoy the small skating rink fenced in by benches and designated for "Fancy Skating".

It has never occurred to me before, but I don't remember ever having seen a child in any of these scenes. Was skating not something that children did in those days? Considered too dangerous?

Publisher / Photographer: Unidentified (Likely Meyers) Notation: The fellow on the right, holding the starting pistol, has a row of badges going down his sleeve and and two rows of similar badges going down his chest.. all of the legible ones read "Holly S. S. Club" (likely Snow Shoe Club) and an annual season (e.g. 1904-05) The legible ones on his sleeve are 1909-10 through to 1912-13. Legible ones on his chest are 1900-01 through 1904-05. It appears that the row on his arm was in process and reserved for the decade of seasons beginning with 1909-1910, the row on his left chest were for the decade beginning 1899-00, and the row on his right chest would have presumably been been for the decade beginning 1889 -90. Since his badges end with the 1912-13 year, it is reasonable to believe this race likely took place that season or the next. The gentleman to his right (hidden behind the starting line-up) sports similar badges on his coat.

POSTCARD Date: Not evident. Not Posted. Post-1911 as dated by church construction. Publisher / Photographer: Lyall Commercial. Notation: Nice little scene in this rare winter view of Nassau Street. The two steeples on the far side (north) of the street are St Luke's Anglican (constructed 1904 -1905) and Crescent Ft. Rouge United (constructed 1911).
