WP1885 WPG - SOUTH MAIN ST. (WEST SIDE - S. OF PORTAGE)

Postal strike is a bit unclear, but the year of mailing appears to be 1908. The view is of the west side of Main Street, looking north towards the intersection of Portage Avenue. The McIntyre Building can be see at the top right. (For some reason, this section of Main Street did not get the attention of many photographers.) Several business signs are legible including: - Bryant's Studio (Photographs), bottom left. - The Lewis Furniture Company - J. S. Stephenson Merchant Tailor - Chevrier & Co. Artisan Boot & Shoe Store - Douglas Shoes - Leslie's Furniture (John Leslie) The Streetcar is labelled "Broadway" and is #256. Publisher is unidentified but Title line and numbering is similar to Winnipeg Photo?

WP1914 WPG - PARADE ON MAIN STREET (MEN WITH SASHES)

Date: Posted 1925 Publisher / Photographer: Unidentified The Breen Motor Company building in this image is still in use at 245 Main Street. It was built in 1922 and helps to date this image. The building to the south has a large vertical sign (not legible) and a small horizontal sign that appears to read "Oakland". It is possible that it was advertising the Oakland Automobile that was in production until the early 30s - and that the building housed another automobile dealership. The building on the right is identified as the "Canadian National Land Settlement Association" and is the former Industrial Building at Main & Water. The men in the parade all have a 5-pointed star on their sashes. Thanks to M. Wroniak's post (below), image can be dated as post 1923.

WP1922 WPG - (EAST SIDE OF MAIN STREET FROM CITY HALL)

Date: Unposted. Likely 1910 (from note in the album this came from). Publisher / Photographer: The (low) quality of this photograph and the fact that, along with three others, it came from a private photo album indicates that this was likely not a commercially produced postcard, but one taken as a personal photograph by an individual - likely a traveller/visitor. The scene is likely taken looking east from the steps of the old City Hall. In the foreground are the Volunteer Monument - now adjacent to the Concert Hall, Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee Monument - now at the English Gardens at Assiniboine Park, and the backside of the Boy with the Boot statue - now at the entrance to Assiniboine Park's English Gardens. The following signage is evident on buildings on the far (East) side of Main Street, left to right: - Foley Bros. Larson - Open Evenings . New Method Dental Parlors . Operations - Iroquois Hotel - Thompson Block (499 Main St.) - Thompson Undertaker - MacPherson Fruit Co. (491 Main St.) - McCarey's - Blackwood (cover on the horse-drawn wagon) More on the Volunteer Monument: www.mhs.mb.ca/docs/sites/volunteermonument.shtml More on the Diamond Jubilee Monument: www.mhs.mb.ca/docs/sites/diamondjubilee.shtml

WP1932 WPG - MAIN STREET WINNIPEG ( LK. N FR. PORTAGE)

Date: Unposted, but the Union Trust Tower at the NE corner of Main & Lombard (tall white building on the right) appears to be under construction which would date the photograph to 1912. Publisher / Photographer: Valentine & Sons, Winnipeg In addition to the streetcar in the foreground, there is a line of about 12+ streetcars further up the street. Signage at the base of the Union Trust tower reads: "George A. Fuller Co. Building Construction".

WP1892 WPG - MAIN STREET WINNIPEG (LK. N FR. PORTAGE)

POSTCARD Date: Not evident. Unposted. Likely 1911 - see below. Publisher / Photographer: Lyall Commercial, Winnipeg Notation: Nice animated scene with a combination of transportation modes - walking, streetcars, bicycles, automobiles and horse-drawn conveyances. The Streetcar on the left is #190 and on the St. Boniface run and the one on the right, #132, is on the Broadway run. The usual Portage & Main policeman is to the front right of streetcar #190. Of particular interest in the image: * To the right, on the east side of Main Street, the open girders are the framework for the Union Trust Building at the Lombard intersection. This would date the image being taken either in the fall of 1911 - or the spring of 1912, when the earliest construction took place. Further information on the Union Trust Tower / Union Tower Building found at: www.winnipeg.ca/ppd/Documents/Heritage/ListHistoricalResources/Lombard-191-long.pdf
