PHOTOGRAPH 11.5cm X 9 cm Date: Not evident. Publisher / Photographer: J. H. Clarke, West Selkirk, Manitoba Notation: J. H. Clark was a photographer and reasonably prolific postcard publisher, publishing lithographic images of his photos as early as 1906. His postcard images were primarily of scenes in the Rocky Mountains but he also captured scenes in Manitoba & Northwestern Ontario. At some point in his career, he took an impressive set of photographs of first nations people. This one, entitled "Miskoopenaises, Squaw, Chippewa Indians", was #5 in a series.

Opening the flap on the chest area releases and accordion strip of eleven small images of indigenous people - all derived from images on actual postcards. Here is the strip of attached images.

Weather most delightful & will continue for 6 weeks until middle of Nov. what is called Indian summer & then - cold. Like the place & will let you know more later. Violin is beautiful better even than anticipated."

PHOTOGRAPH 6 X 10 cm Date: As written on border: July 19, 1923 Publisher / Photographer: This was from a set of photos taken by a traveller who came up to Manitoba through the central U.S., headed east to the Maritimes, and continued south through the eastern U.S. Notation: This appears to be a storefront at Victoria Beach. The man on the steps appears in many of the other photos and must be the travelling companion of the photographer. An aboriginal woman and two of her children are on the platform behind him. Notation: Interestingly, most if not all of the First Nations folks who were part of the show at the Winnipeg Stampede were from Alberta. The organiser, Guy Weadick recruited them because they had done such a great job at his stampede in Calgary in 1912.
