8 km along 309 road a walking track leads to the most accessible and mature kauri stand on Coromandel peninsula. Kauri (agathis australis) grow very slowly and very straight, shedding their lower branches as they grow and were therefore very popular for building. There are only a few pockets of mature Kauri left, mostly in Northland and Coromandel, which are now protected. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agathis_australis

Ōhinemutu is a village of the Ngāti Whakaue tribe on the shores of Lake Rotorua and preceded the town of Rotorua of which it is now a suburb. Ōhinemutu is also a thermal area and it can happen that people wake up to a new thermal feature in their backyard;-) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ohinemutu
