Tessar
Photographs made with an inexpensive Carl Zeiss Jena 50mm f/2.8 lens.
I bought it on a whim simply to try out M42 legacy lenses for fun. I like this lens. It is light in weight and responds well to aperture changes and focussing. I like the long focus throw and close focus ability. In my hand I enjoy its tactile quality. Fidelity seems quite decent and contrast is acceptable. It's a bit slow, of c… (read more)

Another Green Day

A damp Wednesday morning in Trowbridge. An attempt to do it the old way: 50mm prime lens (a Carl Zeiss Jena f/2.8 Tessar); manual focus, of course, and all-manual exposure setting. The camera was a Canon EOS 30D - I am not yet contemplating the final hurdle of film.
The field of view with this camera and lens combination is similar to using a lens of 80mm focal length on a 35mm film camera. Only occasionally frustrating for wide shots, it is generally a satisfying general purpose lens.
Drainpipe on Wednesday

Photography and graffiti are hobbies with some similarities. I have published an article on ipernity expounding this belief.
Graffito has enlivened this photograph. Without the embellishment of the drainpipe, the picture would be mundane.

Carl Zeiss Jena 50mm f/2.8 lens on a Canon EOS 30D. An all-manual experience. I had but a single focal length to work with on this occasion: 50mm on the 30D provides a field of view equivalent to 80mm on full frame or 35mm film camera. Had I had a standard zoom lens attached instead I would have used a wider aspect. There is something to be said for the challenge of one prime lens.

The Late Civic Pride. R.I.P.

Tributes poured in this afternoon following the announcement of the death of Civic Pride. Mr Pride had been suffering from lassitude for several years and his passing had been expected as his will weakened and his grip on his responsibilities was surrendered. He will be greatly missed by the older members of the community.

I have isolated and elongated the statue of the soldier and over-exposed the figure to suggest mist.
I remain to be convinced that there is any glory in being killed on a battlefield. Perhaps the word is used in an attempt to help the bereaved.

Sterling

According to Wikipedia, Sterling is the largest selling cheap brand in the UK and is the eighth biggest selling brand of cigarettes in the UK. They appear to disgust their users so comprehensively that they cannot wait to put the empty packets in a dedicated litter receptacle. Here, a pack has become a part of Autumn's rich and colourful tapestry.

The final image from the paperweight project. Photographed with a Carl Zeiss Jena Tessar 50mm 2.8 lens on a Canon EOS 30D camera.
The Tessar design dates back to 1902 and this particular type was launched at the beginning of the 1950s. It is very light and compact with only four elements and is one of the least expensive M42 lenses - mine was £12 five years ago. There is no cheaper way to acquire a Carl Zeiss lens. The minimum focusing distance is 35 cm (a shade under 14 inches). Compare this to the Nikkor-H 50mm f/2 of 1963 which has a minimum focusing distance of a shade under 24 inches, which was reduced to about 18 inches when reconfigured to the AI standard in 1974. The CZJ Tessar is practically macro!
