Trowbridge Apple Festival

In October, 2013, the second Trowbridge Apple Festival was held in the grounds of Courtfield House, Polebarn Road. The Festival aimed ‘to celebrate and raise awareness of local food and produce, growing and cooking your own food and enjoying the outdoors, seasons and the natural cycle of growing’.

At that time there were official discussions over using Courtfield House (which had previously been home to Roundstone Preparatory School) as a new venue for the Trowbridge Museum. However, the premises being close to ruinous, and subject to all the extra expense involved in keeping up a listed building, the idea came to naught.

Later there was a proposal in the Trowbridge Town Council to buy the grounds and incorporate them into the adjoining Trowbridge Park, but the Town Council did not support the plan despite the park being clearly over-subscribed by a fast growing population. It was the last opportunity to expand the park, because the surrounding land is all developed.

More recently the Apple Festival has been set up in Trowbridge Park and all the charm of Courtfield orchard and outbuildings has been hard to replace with a couple of large tents and an increased emphasis on the free enterprise ethic rather than a simple family celebration organised by enthusiastic volunteers. Courtfield House and its grounds are to be redeveloped for housing.
