Bide Brook Bridge
The bridge was built in the 18th century; the builder was named Ladd, and thus the bridge is sometimes referred to as 'Ladd's Bridge', although as it spans the Bide, it is known also as 'Bide Brook Bridge' and even as 'Corsham Brook Bridge', 'Corsham Brook' being an alternative name for the watercourse. In 1955/6 the Wiltshire County Council had the bridge widened and christened it 'Lacock Town Bridge'. It is also known as the Packhorse Bridge.

Two Columns
These Tuscan (or possibly Doric) columns were once chimneys. Not all of Lacock Abbey is really old; a 'new' hall was built in 1755 by the Squire, John Ivory Talbot. The unwanted chimneys were salvaged for this project and a mason called Benjamin Carter carved a sphinx to go on top.
Benjamin Carter's Sphinx

Lacock Abbey, Wiltshire.
In 1755 Squire John Ivory Talbot had the new hall built and some old chimneys were moved into the grounds as a garden ornament. The Squire got a mason called Benjamin Carter to carve him a sphinx to go atop his renovated Tuscan columns (formerly his chimneys).
There is a myth that when there is a full moon at midnight, the sphinx jumps down from her resting place and walks across the park to drink from the river.
