Light and Shadow

Light and Shadow
Just another assignment. A Tuesday, I think.
A Tuesday in January.
Bloody cold in that old Manor House.
And the car wouldn’t start.
Don’t know how I’ll get back.

What’s that? No make up? OK.
Let’s get on with it.
You stand there. By the window.
Look out. Look wistful.
Can you do bed hair?
That’s nice.
Sorry it’s so cold.
No heating in these old places.

Thank God that’s finished.
I didn’t like the look of that chair
where they put my clothes.
Still, too cold for fleas this weather.
I hope.

He could have given me a lift.
The bus is late.
Wonder what I’ll have for dinner tonight.
Must get some warmer shoes.
They say it’s going to snow.

Apropos of the punctum business: for my own edification, I quote from Wikipedia: Barthes' Camera Lucida develops the twin concepts of studium and punctum: studium denoting the cultural, linguistic, and political interpretation of a photograph, punctum denoting the wounding, personally touching detail which establishes a direct relationship with the object or person within it".

The studium category is really quite wide. The punctum category, on the other hand, is by contrast exclusively about emotional reaction. Related particularly to portraiture, the ultimate effect of punctum is the intimation of death. The essence of photography is the implied message: ''That has been.''

I knew it must have meant something. That’s very instructive and pleasing, thanks.

i'm quite fond of photos that take us one level away from reality. this one does just that - still recognizable, but not really of this world. of course it's in the emotional world! and i agree, it has a 60's feel. being old enough to remember the 60's, but not old enough to have forgotten them yet, i think i'm right along with 'Old Owl'.
