EntanglementS

EntanglementS
Once upon a time there was an old lady who wandered the galaxy on a spiky asteroid in the company of two chaos-based drones. One day she came across two beings embroiled in a deep mess of antagonisms. They appeared to be suffering much from this condition and as she could see that the tangle could be easily disentangled she offered the creatures to help them do so. But the whatnots had been in that state for so long that they no longer knew anything else. Thus they freely abused the old woman, called her every name under the stars and told he to mind her own business. The old girl took off as fast as her beautiful asteroid could carry her. Now she lives in Andromeda.
This is a modest tribute to Augusto Monterroso and his wondrous mini stories. I include here a quick, pedestrian translation of my favourite, as well as the Spanish version. And thank, you, Señor Botijo, for alerting me to don Augusto's presence.
The Black Sheep.
In a far away country there once was a black sheep. She was shot.
A century later the repentant herd erected an equestrian statue of her that looked very well in the park.
Thus, in successive ages, every time there appeared a black sheep, it was swiftly shot, so that future generations of common or garden sheep could exercise themselves in the art of sculpture.
La oveja negra.
En un lejano país existió hace muchos años una Oveja negra. Fue fusilada.
Un siglo después, el rebaño arrepentido le levantó una estatua ecuestre que quedó muy bien en el parque.
Así, en lo sucesivo, cada vez que aparecían ovejas negras eran rápidamente pasadas por las armas para que las futuras generaciones de ovejas comunes y corrientes pudieran ejercitarse también en la escultura.

That’s all very well, but where’s the dinosaur?

El dinosaurio
Cuando despertó, el dinosaurio todavía estaba allí.

The Dinosaur
When they woke up the dinosaur was still there.

A famous short, short, very short story by Augusto Monterroso. It leaves the imagination a bit of work to do! Is that how you would translate it?

Darlingest of darlings. Many thanks for this wee gem of brevity! I didn't know it. It's just my taza de te.
As to the translation, yours is correct. Me, I would have gone for an incorrect, gender-specific version. The thing with Spanish is that in some cases you needn't worry about gender. You either get it from the word's gender itself, or you don't. like with verbs. Despertó can refer to either a man or a woman. Or a man called Loretta.
Stay groovy.

Professor T. Google doesn't agree with you, Dodo! It insists that:

"Thus, from now on, each time black sheep appeared, they were quickly put to arms so that future generations of ordinary sheep could also practice sculpture."

I think you two should have a civilized, linguistic debate on this!

It well might be right, darling mine, but I never ever argue or debate or whatnot with algorithms. I'm must preserve my unrepentant snob's reputation what! :-)
Also, I love the phrase "common or garden". And shot sounds much more to the point (pardon the pun).

"... to exercise themselves in the art of sculpture ..." ;)
Humans are really inventive in justifying their outrages. ;)
Great work, dolores!

You seem to have changed your avatar. So...your Gujarati (?) squiggle does mean butterfly?
Please enlighten!
:-)

* ઇઉ * club has replied to dolores666 club
Yes, dolores, it represents a butterfly, more precisely the symbol of spiritual metamorphosis.
This is one of the reasons why it should not be used as a written word. :)

dolores666 club has replied to * ઇઉ * club
Fair enough re.not using it as a written word, but what about a translation, to wit, my "farfallina"? Would that be acceptable? :-)
* ઇઉ * club has replied to dolores666 club
Thanks for your understanding, dolores. I think the butterfly as a symbol of spiritual metamorphosis has nothing to do with a "farfallina", i.e. a "light girl", a "loose woman", a "floozy". Therefore, I'd like to ask you not to use a translation or paraphrase, but only the symbol as my username.

dolores666 club has replied to * ઇઉ * club
Sorry to correctyou but "farfallina" simply and strictly means little butterfly. Any other added derogatory meanings are just that, male chauvinistic attempts at putting women down, especially women with a mind of their own, and should therefore be ignored.
You have the same insidious tendencies in English (and some other languages, too): a "butterfly" is a floozy, a flighty, inconstant and possible no-better-than-she-ought-to-be kind of girl. This doesn't mean we should stop calling butterflies butterflies. Just ignore the pejorative meanings and there you have it, instant exorcism! :-)
Having said that if the negative meaning really gets to you all that much I will try not to use it; although I'm not very good at allowing anybody to tell me how to speak/use language, you see. I believe in both total freedom of speech and in using words with care and precision.
So, how about lepidopterina? can't get much more precise that that! :-) :-)

I apologize to interfere, but these derogatory meanings of butterfly are interesting. Especially so since in Finnish we only have one negative connotation to the word, and it has nothing to do with women. Our "päiväperho" (päivä + perho = day + butterfly) originally refers to butterfly species living only for one day, but has been expanded to mean anything short-lived. Like a one hit pop-star – male or female.

dolores666 club has replied to Spo
Darling Dr. many thanks for the linguistic bit of gossip. I love anything language(s) related. In English, the equivalent of your päiväperho would be a "fruit fly" or a "May fly". The pop star connection would be more like "a flash in the pan". :-)
Stay groovy!

Dear dolores, even if I have to smile a little, English is not the only language. ;)
You may not allow anyone to tell you how to speak/use language. I would like to say this: I myself didn't even attempt to make a rule and simply asked kindly for my rights to be respected - here my right to freely choose a non-offensive username, which I deliberately chose in the form of a graphic, which I don't want to see paraphrased, but simply accepted as it is.
What do you think? Is it arrogant or is it too much to ask to respect my choice,
a choice that doesn't harm others in any way?
