Monastery of Saint George Selinari

According to tradition, in 1522 three brothers fled from Rhodes. One of them became a monk and settled in the area. One night he saw a light and a voice calling him on the opposite slope. The next day he found an icon of Saint George there and so he began to build a church. The old church of the monastery dates indeed back to the 16th century, and some old cells of the monastery can still be found.
The monastery was dissolved in the 19th century and abandoned, but after the opening of the national road in 1925, the church of Agios Georgios became a place of pilgrimage for passing drivers, as the narrow uphill road passed next to a cliff. They now park the car - and lit a candle.
