Valencia de Alcántara - Tapada del Anta
Valencia de Alcántara is a small town (pop. 5000) just 8 kilometres from the border with Portugal.
As more than 40 megalithic dolmens in the surrounding area prove, the area was already inhabited in the Neolithic period. Around 1213, the area was reconquered by the troops of Alfonso IX of León. At the end of the 15th century the town was incorporated into the Spanish crown.
Tapada del Anta is a well-preserved dolmen with mutually supporting, inwardly inclined orthostats made of granite and a capstone. Seven stones form a chamber more than two metres high and about 4.5 metres in diameter on a mound with the remains of a short passageway and the tumulus.
