Cologne is the fourth-largest city in Germany - and one of the oldest. A Germanic tribe, the Ubii, had a settlement here, this was named by the Romans "Oppidum Ubiorum". In 50 AD, the Romans founded "Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium", the city then became the provincial capital of "Germania Inferior".
Cologne got occupied by French troops in 1794 and incorporated into the French Republic in 1801 (Treaty of Lunéville). In 1815 at the Congress of Vienna, Cologne was made part of the Kingdom of Prussia. The same year Frederick William III of Prussia decided to strongly fortify Cologne by massive walls and forts. In 1825 Frederick William III visited Cologne and named the forts. Fort IV was named after "Erbgroßherzog Paul von Mecklenburg". The park around it has the name "Friedenspark" meanwhile.
