Provins - Tour César

Provins - Tour César
Provins is known for the medieval fortifications. The upper part of the twon is still surrounded by a city wall with 22 towers, all erected between 1226 and 1314.

The largest of all towers, built on a "motte" is the octogonal "Tour César", erected in 12th century on a square base. At that time it was named "Tour du Comte" or "Tour de Roi", when the tower was used as a prison in the 13th and 14th century the name changed to "Tour aux prisonniers".

After the old belltower of the adjoining Collégiale Saint-Quiriac collapsed in 1689 it serves as a - belltower.
