So there I was, lost, waist deep, in a sea of miniature yellow Japanese umbrellas!!!
Of course there's a story behind this picture: 5-6 years ago I was visiting Tosho-gu, a Shinto Shrine, in Nikko Japan. As I was walking around the courtyard, I was surrounded by tens of thousands (Of course I exaggerate, but it really felt like that many!) first graders on a schools field day or tour, all dressed in school uniforms with backpack book bags, yellow hats and yellow umbrellas.
Then it started to rain. Then all the children disappeared neath their umbrellas and I found myself adrift in this strange sea!
I remembered this scene and was prompted to paint it after viewing 'A Little Me, A Little Hue's' watercolor; "Soaked" at her flicker site: www.flickr.com/photos/59595995@N08/5755457437/ and then viewing Benedicte's "et ça me tape sur le systeme" www.flickr.com/photos/bendelachanal/5818291766/, 'neath which she laments the rainy weather.
Watercolor (Yarka pans) on Canson's 140 pound cold pressed. 9 by 12 inches.
