Pupae and cocoons
A selection of my photos of various butterfly and moth pupae and cocoons.

Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta) butterfly pupa
Photographed at home. The wings of the butterfly, which hatched less than 24 hours after this photo was taken, can be seen through the wing case of the pupa.

Chinese Oak Silkmoth (Antheraea pernyi) cocoon
Reared at home from the larval stage.

Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta) butterfly pupa
Photographed at home about 2 hours before the butterfly hatched, which, annoyingly, I missed by about 15 minutes!

Clouded Yellow (Colias croceus) butterfly pupa
Photographed at home having been reared from a larva. Judging by the butterfly's wings showing through like this, I'd guess that the adult will hatch in a couple of days or so.

Clouded Yellow (Colias croceus) butterfly pupa
Bred at home from a larva, with the butterfly less than 3 hours away from emergence.
28 Dec 2009
African moon moth (Argema mimosae) cocoon
I reared this from an egg at home. The narrow end on the left is from where the moth will eventually emerge.

Silver Washed Fritillary (Argynnis paphia) butterfly pupa
Reared at home from a larva. This photo shows the back of the pupa with its silver spangles, in which can be seen a reflection of the sky, clouds and sun!
