Folder: NORTH STAFFORDSHIRE RAILWAY ROLLING STOCK RESTORATION TRUST
The North Staffordshire Railway Rolling Stock Restoration Trust (NSRRSRT) has awarded us the contract to complete the work on NSR 61, as they have obtained additional funding through a PRISM grant.
2014 will see the restored coach, together with NSR 127, in operation on the Foxfield Railway, as part of their Heritage / Vintage Train, which has been funded by their "Knotty Coaches Appeal" as well as grants and donations.
The carriage has now been inspected, and work has started. The doors (sub-project) has begun, even before the body has been dismounted and transferred into the workshop.
To make use of having somewhat easier access, much of the minor repairs to the structure will be carried out before taking the body into the workshop.
Update on the doors - half are now up to their first primer coat, another two will soon reach that point, and the last two have been partially dismantled, assessed and repairs are now in progress. Preparation for further painting (undercoats) continues........all eight doors are now being painted - and being rehung on the coach.
The work underway is not especially photogenic; consisting of some dismantling, various repairs and preparing surfaces for painting.
The lower side panels have been undercoated and are now re-fitted.
The non-original roof has been stripped off, and new roofsticks are being laminated (a process which gives greater strength and flexibility). The new roof planks are being dry-fitted. The whole thing will be dismantled and then painted before being finally assembled. A similar exercise for the floor and seats is under way. The running boards have been test fitted and painted, and the underframe has started to go chocolate. A little final work remains.
Some more painting has been done on the carriage itself, both inside and out. The interior has now been scumbled (followed by varnishing for protection) The exterior is now been rubbed down between gloss top coats. The brassware has all been dry fitted. The roof planks are almost all installed.
The remaining work is to finish the top coats and line out the panels, canvas and paint the roof, glaze the fixed windows, re-fit the droplights and brassware. Finally, remount on the underframe and touch up the floor paint.
Last job - get it back onto the low-loader and send off to Staffordshire.
NSR 61 has now (12th March 2014) returned to the Foxfield Railway.
The Knotty Coach Trust had the official launch of their heritage train on 7th August, and the first weekend in public service was 9 and 10th August 2014.
