The restoration of the passenger cars from the Saltburn Cliff Lift during the winter 2010/2011, including images of the 'Victorianisation' process.
The Cliff Lift was built in 1884 (to replace a single cable vertical lift, the structural timbers of which were condemmed) it is Britain's oldest working water balance funicular. Until the main wheel was replaced in 1998 the only major change had been to provide an electrical pump in 1923, to replace the original town gas engine. The water used in the system is collected in a large tank at the lower station, periodically the water is pumped into the top holding tank. From where water is supplied to the tank of the car parked at the upper station. Once the weight of the upper car (and the contents), is greater than that of the lower car, then gravity takes over and the cars change places using the connecting cable. The water in the car which has just arrived at the bottom is discharged....and so on.
The cars were craned back into place onto their underframes on Monday 11th April 2011, the Lift was re-opened to passengers on 22nd April 2011 (Good Friday).
Our work is now finished on this project; but there were a few extra images waiting to be uploaded.
Please check back!
Better still - go and have a trip, the view is wonderful, it certainly beats walking up the cliff path and is well worth the small fee charged.....
Tin Man Films have produced a couple of short films about the Saltburn Cliff Lift, one concentrating on the restoration. [link ?]
We have had a couple of other encounters with this Cliff Lift, including a track inspection.
There was a nasty fire on 16 January 2024, and the re-opening is postponed ...
