Began on 19th September 2021, after earthquake swarm from the 11th, lasted for 85 days - until 13th December 2021. Started with effusive / low explosivity index but subsequently become a grade 2 VEI event. Lava reached the sea on 28th September. At least five vents have been observed.
The lava flows and ash-falls have been quite destructive of property [as of 2nd October over 1,000 buildings] and damaging to crops. Up to 10,000 people have been evacuated. Fortunately, no human casualties have been reported.
This coincided with eruptions in Geldingaldir [Iceland] ...
