Folder: TALYLLYN RAILWAY
Assisting with the work on the "Corris Van" - specifically building a replacement Underframe, in Oak. Subsequently, we did some work with the roof sticks.
After considerable discussions, we then undertook to rebuild the bodywork. Initially the request was just to make a kit of parts, but eventually it was agreed that we would assemble and paint the bodywork and fit it to the chassis. The only remaining work at Pendre will be to fit the brakes and buffers before a FTR examination ...
This was originally supplied in 1878 by the Falcon Engine Works to the Corris Railway, who rebuilt the body in 1900. After the Corris closed in 1948, The Talyllyn acquired the Van in the 1950s, where it was re-bodied in 1960(?), some work was done to the underframe in 1974 & maybe at other times.
The plan is that Stanegate Restorations will repair / rebuild the underframe in Haltwhistle, while a team in Pendre do the same for the body. The timber underframe parts arrived in late October 2021 (there are some metal items "to follow"). Once finished, it will go back to Wales and the body will be remounted. After some final finishing touches, it will be FTR tested and should then be available for PW and similar works trains. Hopefully, there will be some photographic charter and other work in addition.
The first few images are of the complete van, before this project started. The Headstocks and Solebars [probably not all original] are not in good condition, and the modern [about 1960] body has definitely seen better days, especially on the western end. Images to show the initial condition and the work in progress will follow. Lastly, some images to show the completed project, probably later in 2023.
We have done some repairs to the internal sections of the underframe, as these are more likely to be original. However, the solebars are Meranti, and the one we cut into in an investigation prior to intended repairs is already in very poor condition from extensive rot due to water getting into the grain. The other isn't as bad, but it, and the headstocks are to be replaced with oak.
Having worked on the chassis, the next request from Wales was for us to repair or replace the roof sticks [ we did both ... the replacements were laminated] ...
Next, we were asked to produce a kit of parts for the framework and new matchboard planking, eventually - after much discussion - it was agreed that we would make / repair the framework, plank it, etc etc and then paint the completed van. It was inspected & filmed early July 2023 ...
It was ready for collection by middle of August, having received white roof paint and several additional coats of protective varnish.
