Note : the 2008 drop was on a global scale, but was basically triggered by the collapse of the "sub-prime mortgage market in the usa" - which wasn't that devastating to the overall american economy, although some parts of it - and the people involved - really suffered.
So you could say that when the american economy gets a cold, the UK economy [and parts of Europe] get double pneumonia, probably with pleurisy ...
The previously very successful firm I worked for in 2008 went bust as a result of that recession, and, as a professional in a specialist discipline it took me many many months to find suitable work in that field.
