. . . In 1863, Huxley published an image that staged four ape skeletons side-by-side with a single human one, and told a story. It became famous as it bagged readers to look from left to right (see figure 5.2) . Compare the heads, it said, the chests, the forearms, the hands, and you see evolution in action. Human beings derived their nature from their biology. They were a single species, however, stretched out they were by a plethora of different natural “characters”. They drew on their ape history. Natural selection was a law, and biological evolution downplayed human and social history in favor of species history. ` Page 78
