The buddha’s hands are performing this dharmachakra pavatna mudra: the hand gesture that implies the turning of the wheel. This refers to a specific point in the Buddha’s life. He had rejected the path of extreme asceticism, and the practice of the Middle Way between self-indulgence and self-punishment he had found freedom from suffering, and liberation of spirit. His first teaching on the Middle Way was delivered to five ascetics, who had been practising extreme mortification. They were impressed by his radiance and beauty that they realized something extraordinary had happened: he had become awakened. So they asked him to teach them. - page - 294
