The Pruitt-Igoe public housing projects, which consisted of 33 identical 11 story buildings, turned out to be one of the most hellish buildings in United States history. While it's architect Minoru Yamasaki, who also designed the World Trade Center Towers, had the best of intentions; Pruitt-Igoe quickly turned out to be one of the most horrific nightmares this country has ever seen. Shortly after it's completion in 1954 it began to decline quickly due to the lack of up-keep and maintenance.

Because the buildings were designed with skip-stop elevators, meaning the elevator only stopped at every third floor, it gave rapists an opportunity to hide in the stairwells and wait for there victims.

Toward the late sixties criminal psychopaths would wait on the rooves of Pruitt-Igoe and sniper shoot victims below. Police would often not respond to Pruitt-Igoe because of such shootings and fire-bombs being thrown on them from the windows above.

By the early 1970s only a few hundred people would occupy these ginormous structures. The United States Post Office eventually stopped delivering mail due to safety concerns.

The United States government thought such little of Pruitt-Igoe and its tenants the military began spraying a radio-active Zinc Cadmium Sulfide on the occupants to test the effects of the substance.

After Pruitt-Igoe's complete demolition in 1976 the area laid vacant for nearly 40 years. It's important that Pruitt-Igoe is brought back into forefront of American minds, otherwise this experiment could very well happen again in today's decaying inner-city climate.

There is a documentary called The Pruitt-Igoe Myth and while it is well done, unfortunately they left out many many important historical facts. ~ Matrix B2
