Virgil and The Aeneid

Virgil and The Aeneid
Virgil's great epic poem, 'The Aeneid,' became a literary classic immediately on its appearance and has lost none of its power since. the Roman world honored Virgil for his poetic genius not only by treasuring his work but also by portraying him in art. here two muses, who inspired artists, flank the poet while he writes his epic poem (C.M. The tone and ideal of Roman literature, like that of the Greeks, was humanistic and worldly. Roman poets and prose writers celebrated the dignity of humanity and the range of its accomplishments. They stressed the physical and emotional joys of a comfortable, peaceful life. Their works were highly polished, elegant in style, and intellectual in conception. Roman poets referred to the gods frequently and treated mythological themes, but always the core of their work was human, not divine.~ Page 167
