I am not a person
I am a succession of persons
Held together by memory.

When the string breaks,
The beads are scattered.

A lengthy debate on the nature of self was proposed by Oxford philosopher Galen Strawson. He outlined what he called “the Pearl view, because it suggests that many mental selves exist, one at a time and one after another, like pearls on a string” Strawson’s pearls are particular patterns of neural activity, or states of activation, that come and go. He retains much of our ordinary ideas about selves, claiming that they are “Subjects of Experience that are Single ‘Mental’ Things” or SESMETS. Yet he throws out the idea that either agency or personality is necessary and, most controversially, long-term continuity over time. Each self may last a few seconds, or a much longer time, but then it disappears and a new one appears. ~ Page 129
